Father and son team run 2 florist shops

Edward J. Dillon has never really stopped to smell the roses. The 73-year-old Stratford man works long hours seven days a week and has since he was 12 years old.

Then again, he doesn’t have to stop to inhale the fragrance of blossoms. The sweet perfume of roses and dozens of other fresh flowers wafts through his two Stratford business locations. Dillon is the owner of Edward J. Dillon & Sons, which has shops at 180 Boston Ave. and 2168 Main St.

“I get here usually at 6:30 in the morning and who knows when I go home. My customers ask me, `When are you going to retire?’ I tell them, `When I’m in the ground’. I enjoy what I do,” Dillon said.

He opened his florist business in Milford 53 years ago after an eight-year “apprenticeship” at a greenhouse on West Avenue. His family grew up across the street from it, but he was the only one of eight siblings who gravitated toward the floral business.
