Flower shops gear up for romantic gift-giving rush

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Extra drivers and flower shop assistants are ready to deliver an avalanche of roses for Valentine’s Day.  

“We bring in loads and loads of flowers,” said Christy Bennett, office manager for Young Floral Co. on Pennsylvania Avenue in Charleston.

“We ordered 6,000 roses in assorted colors. We have purple, orange and unique colors. We try to have something for everybody. Red is the most popular.

“You don’t have to spend a fortune to impress your sweetheart,” Bennett added. “We have everything from low priced to extravagant.”

Some folks stop by for the cash-and-carry special of $ 39.95 for a dozen long-stemmed red roses. Others opt for a dozen roses in any color they choose at a cost of $ 72.95, including delivery. Stuffed animals range from small for $ 20 to huge for $ 100 or more.

For some purchasers, price is no object.

“We have people order five, six, seven dozen roses all for the same person,” Bennett said. “Some may order a giant tiger and five dozen roses.”

To handle the volume of orders, the store hires extra help to work inside and out.
