Flower shops short on drivers for Valentine’s Day due to oilboom

Roses are red, violets are blue, if you have a Texas driver’s license florists want you.

If you’re not busy Valentine’s Day and are looking for some extra cash, you may want to consider delivering flowers.

Many local flower shops are short on drivers this year, which they attribute to the oil boom.

“They’re going out there because of the money,” Sherry Garcia, owner of Sherry G’s Flowers & Gifts, 1003 Maple Ave., said. “It’s an issue for every place in town, not just flower shops.”

This year, Garcia already has the six drivers she was looking for.

“I use people I’ve met in the community and they take a couple of vacation days and work for me on a holiday,” Garcia said. “I’ve done this for so many years I have built up a network of reliable people to help. We are a smaller shop but our business increases by about 300 percent on Valentine’s Day.”
