Florist to hand out roses to honor veterans

DOVER — A local florist will be honoring fallen heroes Memorial Day.

Cook & Smith Florist in Dover is handing out 400 fresh Ecuadorian roses to the families of veterans.

They were selected along with only 180 florists to participate in Memorial Day Flowers. Founded in 2011, Memorial Day Flowers coordinates the distribution of roses at more than 100 cemeteries across the United States.

Adria Green, who works at Cook & Smith, said that they first learned about the program through their supplier, Delaware Valley Wholesaler.

Cook & Smith owner Erlene George quickly applied.

“She just wanted to give back to the community to show her appreciation for the veterans,” Ms. Green said.

Staff at Cook & Smith received the shipment Thursday, and, after sorting and processing them, Ms. Green said they planned to give them away to veterans who visited the shop Friday.
